› QMS For Engineering Analysis/Calculations

I have been tasked to come up with a quality management system for engineering shock analsyes performed, and the calculation writeups that support submarine design/build (our key product).

However, I question the applicability of QMS for such a product. It is not like we are stamping out aluminum widgets. Every FE analysis is for unique items in the submarine done by one of 100 engineers with masters and avg 19 years experience. Every engineer cringes at the thought of QMS for their work, having to capture metrics (which I have no idea of pertinent metrics) that they feel brings no value added.

Any thoughts/comments??

I recently re-discovered an article which appears to speak to your issue. See "Setting Quality Goals:Use Observed Rates of Continuous Improvement to Position Targets" by Arthur M. Schneiderman in Quality Progress, April, 1988. The author suggests that for each increment in time that is equal to the "half-life", the defect level drops, on average, by 50%. Regards.
