› Socoge Crimp Control Digital gage

Does anyone use this gage for measuring crimp heights during manufacuture? If, so, How is this thing calibrated? I am not a metrologist...and I am being told it doesnt need calibration, just a cal. check against a block....any advise is much appreciated.

In nearly all the projects I've seen, products and processes are implemented without building in the quality. If you are a startup, you are in a PRIME position to develop/create the processes that consistently produce the desired results. Begin with the end in mind - what is the desired outcome? What products/services could realistically achieve these outcomes? What processes are needed to create these products and services? What inputs are required to initiate the processes properly?
Eductating the workers heightens awareness, but can frustrate them as they hear one thing, but see processes that have inherent quality defects that go unnoticed.
The BEST way to gain experience is to look to someone else's experinece and learn from them. As a mentor or consultant. In the truest sense of the word, they will do nothing more than watch what you are doing and be an advisor. There are companies and people who work more as a project coach/advisor and will not only assist with the "front end" of the transition, but also work with you in developing strategic plans, processes, measures, and results. It's harder to find the companies who roll up the sleeves and work with you, but they do exist. One key point here is working WITH you, not instead of you. If you rely totally upon an external company for your success, you will have no incentive to "grow" the understanding within your own organization.

Hope this helps. If I may be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to call upon me.

Hiring a consultant to advise -- not do the work is okay. You just want to be careful not to create a system around the consultant but rather a system that reflects and is OWNED by the organization. Ownership is critical.

The fastest way and the most likely to succeed is to hire a competent consultant. True, it may be costly, but in the long run it may prove to be less expensive than other routes.

If you want to do a “do-it-yourself” implementation, be prepared for massive study of a range of quality subjects. There are hundreds of books and software packages to choose from. Any number of vendors will jump at the chance to help you. One prominent source is the American Society for Quality bookstore at http://qualitypress.asq.org.

Personally, if I had to select one book only, it would be “Juran’s Quality Handbook, Fifth Edition.” Another book, a recent release, “Quality and Productivity for the 21st Century” by William G. Fenner, is also worth adding to your bookshelf. This 600-page volume is available at www.qci-intl.com.
