I was recently given the task to think of a way to do R&R tests for two scales that we have here in the plant. The scales have measuring ranges up to 1500 kg. How can this be done? We have standard weights, one of 1000 kg and 20 pcs. of 20 kg each. Should I put a fixed weight on the scales 30 times or ... ? Thanks for any help.

[I agree with the previous message] You have to look at the Gage R&R as a "Measurement System" Analysis.
The Measurement System is all the elements (parts, people, environment, the gage itself, etc.) that make up the use of a particular gage for a particular part. If your personnel are not using the supplier gage then they are NOT a part of that system. Remember, the whole point of the R&R is to determine the variation influences on the system and to determine if they are acceptable in the given circumstances.
As an example, the users of your gage may take more care when measuring or may be better trained. Their influence on the supplier R&R may give you improper results. You want to know if the users in that particular system are adequate.
It is OK to be far apart from each other if you both do an R&R independently. Just examone what's different and fix the issue.

Hi,
Gage R&R is a study of "your" equipment's suitability for measurement (and
for any remedial actions taken thereof) . So as far as possible I feel ,
this must be isolated from various influences. For instance if you were
doing the studies both from your firm and from your appraiser's firm, the
data will be inconclusive on wheather your appraiser is having more
variability or theirs (for this you must use one more factor - firm where
it is tested . but then it will be same or atlease same as each doing it
saperately) or the comfort level of the appraiser on their firm's machine.
So it would be better in my understanding to do the gage studies
saperately on their own.
It could be a better idea if you can set a supplier standards and get the
analysis of R&R studies from the suppliers also.
Hope this helps.
Thanks
Pradeep
