› Measurement errors from vibrations - need solution...

I am trying to measure parts near a stamping press, but vibrations from the press are causing errors - does anyone have a working solution to this problem?

You need the OPTOTRAK PROseries

NDI offers a product called the OPTOTRAK PROseries which will help you with the issues you described. It's a portable CMM which uses an optical tracker to measure the coordinates of a handheld probe or laser scanner. It works with most inspection or reverse engineering software packages so it works just like any manual CMM... but the operator is completely free to move about within a measurement volume the size of a car!

What the OPTOTRAK PROseries offers, which is truly unique, is something called dynamic part referencing. Whenever you are concerned about part movement, you can simply add a small target to the part or fixture and it will warn you if the part moves. The best part of this is that you can move the part or tracker while measuring through dynamic referencing with the addition of a couple of small targets attached to the part. No matter what you do, the system takes measurements, all of which are unaffected by the movement. It can do this because the tracker measures the location of the part using the targets and the location of the probe (or scanner) relative to them to keep everything in the part's coordinate system. It absolutely removes errors due to movement and vibration. Without dynamic referencing, you will see high errors and poor repeatability due to movement and vibrations, but with it on, you will definitely see accurate and consistent numbers. You can see more information about all of this on the NDI website at http://www.ndi.ca/PortableCMM or check out or video demos on YouTube at http://ca.youtube.com/user/NDIMetrology

Vibration Isolation System

You should start by contacting your CMM original equipment manufacturer who can recomend the proper vibration isolation system you will need. You will most probably have to re-certify your CMM anyway so I would look hard at finding a new location for you CMM far enough away from the vibration you are dealing with in the press area.
Best wishes,
May your day be blessed with peace, hope, joy, and love!
