We are a manufacturer of auto parts, wheel hubs and ring gears mainly. For a lot of our masters, the prints specify tolerances of .0001" or so. Most of them are straight diameters and heights. Currently we have a CMM and that's about it. I have been looking into a laser mic for the diameters, and I'm assuming I can use a surface plate and an indicator (with an appropriate resolution) to measure the heights. However, we have some functional gages that measure true position of bolt holes, the print specifies the pins as +/- .0001" and the true position of the pins to the bore as .0002" max. What method could be used to check the position, which essentially is a constructed feature. With a .0002" tolerance I will never get the gage to pass using CMM. I guess what I'm asking is what high precision methods are available other than laser mics, for different applications. I think we as an organization run into a lot of problems because we try and certify the masters and gages with CMM and standard equipment and expect to hold these tight tolerances, then we end up with false data. Our gages use LDVT probes, so we have to input the master values, if we are off it leads to problems. I'm looking for a high precision device with flexibility, i.e. measure more than just an OD.
