What is the appropriate way to identify a functional gage, i.e. a mating part from the customer? For instance we make a handle for a hacksaw, and there is a hole that must line up with the hole in the actual blade. We have the customer's blade (mating part) that we insert in the handle to make sure they line up. During an audit how might that be handled (no pun intended)? I suppose I could measure the distance to the hole somehow, but it's more of a functional test.

Whenever we have a gage that
Whenever we have a gage that is job specific (functional gage) we would label it as a "special" gage. This gets a unique ID number & is entered into our calibration recall software so it can be traced like all other instruments & gages. It is up to your company's quality management policy to determine if this type of gage requires calibration & at what frequency. So far, we have not had any problem with doing things this way and we were recently audited for AS9100.
